What is Operational Coaching®?
Operational Coaching® utilises what we have come to call an ‘enquiry-led approach (ELA®) towards leadership and management, enabling managers and leaders to have highly effective coaching conversations ‘in the moment’ and ‘on the job’.
This skill enables managers to increase their own effectiveness within their role and build high-functioning collaborative teams.
What does Operational Coaching® do?
Unlike other coaching models (including the GROW model) that favour a formal coaching setting and focus on the coachee alone, STAR® focuses on the Manager’s mindset, habits, and behaviours, encouraging them to change how they respond in everyday operational settings, enabling a coaching approach more of the time.
It could occur in a chance encounter and it could take as little as 30 seconds. Operational Coaching® conversations can sometimes be exactly one question long! By purposefully using an ‘enquiry-led approach’ the Manager creates an opportunity to engage with the person that they're speaking with in a different way, pulling from them different, often unexpected, and perhaps unique insights and ideas.

How do I learn Operational Coaching®?
The STAR® programmes will embed Operational Coaching® and a coaching mindset within as little as 10 weeks.
What is the STAR® Programme?
The STAR® programme has two programmes within it:
STAR® Coach
STAR® Coach is a 10-week programme designed for every level of management from aspiring or first line supervisors all the way up to C-suite Executives. It's a behavioural change programme that teaches leaders and managers how to adopt an Operational Coaching® style of management to coach others in the flow of work every day.
By learning how to embed a coaching mindset, managers and leaders develop the skills to stop their habitual behaviour, instead asking powerful questions that stimulate deeper levels of reflection from those they work with.
There’s no onerous paperwork or assessments, and we don't waste time with theory – learning is easily integrated into the working day. Just 2 x 30-minute slots per week will generate a measurable change in behaviour.
- Content: 10 online modules, workplace missions, and reflective learning logs
- Duration: 3 months
- Study/Activity Time: 1 hour per week
- Qualification: APMG International Certification
Certified STAR® Manager
The Certified STAR® Manager programme is a 5-6 month programme intended for managers and leaders who have direct responsibility for developing the capability and performance of a team or group of direct reports.
The programme includes the STAR® Coach modules and builds on those acquired behaviours and skills by learning how to proactively develop others. By focusing on how to use a coaching approach to set goals that will stretch capabilities, to hold developmental conversations, to manage 1-to-1s, to offer career coaching, give development feedback and handle challenging conversations, managers and leaders regain an average of 20% of their time as team capacity grows.
There’s no onerous paperwork or assessment – learning is easily integrated into the working day with just 2 x 30-minute slots per week.

- Duration: 5-6 months
- Study/Activity Time: 1 hour per week
