What is AI literacy?
AI literacy refers to an individuals understanding of the fundamentals of AI, and the relevant terminology related to it.
AI literacy can cover technology, but perhaps more importantly refers to the ethical considerations of AI. For businesses especially, AI literacy can often refer to how AI relates to compliance. Training in AI literacy for compliance will help employees understand how to use AI safely and securely as part of their day job.
More advanced AI literacy training may go into topics such as prompt engineering on tools such as ChatGPT, as well as the basics of generative AI and AI agents.
Is AI literacy training mandatory?
The EU AI Act requires businesses using AI to provide mandatory AI literacy training for their workforce. The new regulation was first applied in February 2025, ensuring that AI systems used within the EU are safe, ethical, and trustworthy, fostering innovation while protecting fundamental rights and safety.
AI Literacy training is mandated within many legal and regulatory frameworks. However, rather than seeing this course as adding to mandatory training programs, it’s important to remember that to enable change we need to embark on a learning journey.
Can I learn AI literacy as part of an apprenticeship?
All QA apprenticeships will include an element of training in essential AI skills, including AI literacy.
